Oct 19 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team will play a highly-competitive 16-game schedule for the 2007 season, head coach Laura Brand announced. The Scarlet Knights will face off against a total of six teams, which advanced to the 2006 NCAA Tournament, including two-time defending national champion Northwestern.
The schedule features nine home games which will be played at either the Rutgers Stadium Complex or Yurcak Field, depending on the weather conditions.
Rutgers will open play for its 2007 campaign with a scrimmage against in-state rival Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Scarlet Knights officially kick off the season a week later, traveling north to take on 2006 NCAA tournament participant Cornell on Saturday, Feb. 24.
RU returns to Piscataway for a four-game homestand, which concludes with the Scarlet Knights' first BIG EAST Conference game of the season. Rutgers will face Villanova on Wednesday, Feb. 28, followed by contests against Delaware on Saturday, March 3 and three-time national champion Princeton on Wednesday, March 7. The Scarlet Knights will wrap up their four-opponent stretch with their BIG EAST opener against Loyola (Md.) on Sunday, March 11.
The Scarlet Knights will be on the road again, taking on 2006 NCAA tournament participant Monmouth on Wednesday, March 14, before returning home for three consecutive games. Rutgers will face Hofstra on Wednesday, March 21, followed by BIG EAST opponent and 2006 NCAA tournament quarterfinalist Georgetown on Saturday, March 24. Old Dominon will be in town on Monday, March 26 to close out RU's brief three-game home stretch.
Rutgers will play its final game in the month of March at Temple on Friday, March 30. The Scarlet Knights are slated for a match-up at St. Joseph's on Tuesday, April 3, before playing its final pair of home games of the season. RU will face BIG EAST opponent Connecticut on Saturday, April 7, followed by a match-up with the Manhattan Jaspers on Tuesday, April 10.
The strength of RU's schedule lies in its final three games of the season as the Scarlet Knights will face a pair of strong BIG EAST competitors as well as two of last year's NCAA Final Four participants. Rutgers will take on conference rivals Syracuse on Friday, April 13 and Notre Dame on Saturday, April 21. The Irish advanced to the Final Four a year ago. The women's lacrosse team will complete the 2007 regular season at defending national champion Northwestern on Monday, April 23.
The 2007 season will also feature the first BIG EAST Championship for women's lacrosse, which will be held Friday, April 27 and Sunday, April 29, at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. The semifinal games will take place on April 27 with the first seed taking on the fourth seed, while the second seed will play the third seed.
Following an off day on Saturday, the inaugural BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championship Game will take place on Sunday, April 29.
The Rutgers women's lacrosse team finished the 2006 season with a 7-9 record under the direction of Brand. The Scarlet Knights welcome back All-BIG EAST first team member Katie Batiuk (Jackson, N.J.) and All-BIG EAST second team honorees Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, N.J.) and Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, Md.). A highly-talented eight-member recruiting class, including six All-Americans will also join the squad this season.
