RU Women's Lax Falls at Ohio State, 14-9
Apr 30 | Women's Lacrosse
COLUMBUS, OH - Despite four points on three goals and one assist from junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ), the Rutgers University women's lacrosse team dropped its road finale to the Ohio State Buckeyes 14-9 on Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Under cloudy skies, the Buckeyes struck early and often, scoring the game's first four goals before Rutgers freshman Michelle Poole (Hackettstown, NJ) put RU on the board. The midfielder slipped a free-position shot past Buckeye goalie Kristen Gilwee nine minutes into the first half to cut the Rutgers deficit to three goals.
Following Poole's goal, RU got scores from Batiuk, freshman midfielder Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, MD) and another from Poole to even the score at 4-4, but four goals by Ohio State over the next ten minutes allowed the Buckeyes to go into the halftime with an 8-4 advantage.
After Rutgers junior Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) scored her second goal of the season to make the score 11-7 in favor of Ohio State with just under 20 minutes remaining, the Buckeyes scored three of the games final five goals to come away with the 14-9 victory.
Freshman attacker Nina Franksoski (Maplewood, NJ) sandwiched the 22nd and 23rd goals of her freshman season in between tallies from Ohio State's Kelyn Laws and Andrea Fischer in the game's final five minutes; however, it was not enough to get RU back into the game.
Rutgers freshman goalie Katherine Parker (Sykesville, MD) started her fourth consecutive game, and despite making five saves, the freshman suffered her third loss of the season.
Batiuk picked up three draw-controls and caused three turnovers, while Marchitello picked up one ground-ball and registered two caused turnovers in the losing effort.
With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fell to 7-8 on the season, but will look to even their record in their season final on Saturday, March 6.
The win gave the Buckeyes their fourth win of the season as they closed out their 2006 campaign with a 4-12 record.
The Scarlet Knights will return home to close out their 2006 season with a Senior Day game against the 10th-ranked Big Red of Cornell. The Big Red earned a share of the Ivy League title after defeating Harvard on Friday, but they followed that victory with a tough 5-4 loss to the Stanford Cardinal on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Day festivities will commence at 12:50 on Saturday, with the game set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Ronald N. Yurcak Field.
