PISCATAWAY, NJ -For the second consecutive season, the women's tennis team has been named by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as All-Academic status. Rutgers is one of 93 teams to earn the award and, in addition to team honors, also had three women earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards in Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ), Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) and Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario).
The ITA awards any member team all-academic honors for obtaining a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. For team members to be qualified, their names must appear on the NCAA eligibility form and each player must have competed in at least one varsity match. Individual student-athletes can earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status if they win a varsity letter, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 and have been enrolled at their respective university for a minimum of two semesters.
Following the 2004-05 season, the Scarlet Knights earned their first ITA All-Academic award.
"It is my hope that with each year, this accomplishment becomes part of the culture of the women's tennis team," he said. "The girls on the team set this as a goal and I am very pleased that they were able to accomplish their goals not only athletically, but also academically."
Individually, Shmakova, Markowitz and Dujsic all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the second time in their careers. Shmakova, Markowitz and Dujsic helped Rutgers to a 14-10 record last season, including an eighth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. Shmakova posted a big win at sixth singles in the opening round of the BIG EAST tournament, helping lift the Scarlet Knights to a 4-3 win over Marquette.
