PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's lacrosse program announced two players have signed National Letters of Intent. Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) and Danielle Mascera (Verona, N.J.) both intend to play for the Scarlet Knights in 2009.
"While this class is small, their immediate contribution will be significant," said head coach Laura Brand. "Both players bring superb athleticism and speed to our program and I am excited to see them join our team."
Steinberg, currently a senior at Suffern High School in Suffern, N.Y., has been on the varsity lacrosse team since the eighth grade, accumulating 144 goals and 50 assists in her career. She has improved every season she has played and scored 67 goals with 25 assists as a junior. She has received Honorable Mention All-American, All Section and first team All-County honors two times. Steinberg has been a member of the Empire State Games team all four years she has played, and a member of the New York State Team One her sophomore and junior seasons.
"Ali has competed at an elite level since the eighth grade and is regarded as one of the finest midfielders in this class," said Brand. "I am excited to work with someone from such a great family and background. Ali knows what it takes to succeed and I expect she will accomplish a lot during her time at Rutgers."
Steinberg has also played varsity tennis since the eighth grade, receiving first team All-Section, All-County, and All-League honors this season, where she lost in the final sixteen of the section tournament.
Mascera attends Verona High School in Verona, N.J., where she had an amazing junior season, scoring 76 goals while picking up 39 assists, both school records. She is the leader in career goals (173) and career assists (92). She finished 14th in the state with 115 points and was named All-Galaxy, first team All-County, and first team All-Conference. She was also a member of the US Lacrosse National Tournament Team One for Upper Atlantic. Mascera finished with 48 goals and 28 assists in 2006, receiving first team All-Galaxy and first team All-Conference honors; she tallied 49 goals and 25 assists in 2005 and was named first team All-Conference.
"Danielle is a fast, intense player who will immediately impact our program," said Brand. "Her personality and drive are exactly what this program strives to represent on a daily basis. Danielle comes from a Rutgers family (uncle Paul Mascera is a '91 graduate) and I am excited to see her grow into a strong Division 1 player."
Mascera also served as team captain for both the volleyball and basketball teams. This season in volleyball she was the Colonial Hills Conference Player of the Year, second team All-County, first team All-Conference, and she holds the school-record for career assists. In 2006 she was first team All-Conference and set a Verona HS season record with 395 assists.
