CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Rutgers junior All-American shortstop Todd Frazier (Toms River, N.J.) was named a quarterfinalist for the Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award, presented by the College Baseball Foundation, the group announced on Friday.
The Scarlet Knight is among 20 standout players from around the nation included on the reduced list that spans 17 schools and 10 conferences around the country. The selection committee will reduce the list to ten semifinalists following NCAA Regional play this weekend. The three finalists will be announced during the College World Series.
The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player and will be televised nationally by Fox College Sports. This award is the only to encompass the first pitch of the college season to the final out in Omaha. Past winners include Kurt Suzuki of Cal State Fullerton in 2004, Alex Gordon of Nebraska in 2005 and pitcher/designated hitter Brad Lincoln of Houston in 2006.
"I am honored to be included on such a prestigious list," Frazier said after receiving the news. "I want to thank my teammates for helping me improve each year."
"This is an amazing collection of talent and character," said Raymond Richardson, Chairman of the 2007 Brooks Wallace Award Committee. "The excitement is building as we progress towards the week of festivities surrounding the Wallace Award presentation and the College Baseball Hall of Fame Induction."
Frazier, the BIG EAST Player of the Year, was also named a First Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday. He enters play on Saturday in the NCAA Regional in Charlottesville, Va. ranked fourth in the nation with 22 home runs, and fourth in runs per game. The leadoff hitter is also in the top-10 nationally in walks per game (8th), home runs per game (8th), and slugging percentage (10th).
He leads the BIG EAST in several offensive categories and is among the top-3 in nearly every category.
