Rutgers Women's Tennis Wins Convincingly

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers University women's tennis team swept away Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-0, in its spring season opener on Wednesday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights captured all six singles matches and won the doubles point in convincing fashion with three easy victories.
"This was a very convincing win over a very respectable team," said head coach Ben Bucca. "This is certainly an early step forward for our program and speaks well for the potential of this team."
Rutgers (1-0) picked up wins at the top two singles spots as senior Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) topped Julija Korshunova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 and junior Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0 over FDU's Ksenia Chemyshova.
Freshman Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) dominated Jessica DeCarlos 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) impressed at the No. 4 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sarah Delliere. At No. 5 singles, sophomore Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jinny DeCarlos and sophomore Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.) rounded out the singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 dominating performance over Christina Martine at No. 6.
Rutgers also picked up three doubles victories as Zang and Zaretser teamed up to beat Korshunova and Jinny DeCarlos 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Elder-Bush and Tran won at No. 2, 8-1, over Chemyshova and Jessica DeCarlos, while the duo of Arlak and Baker topped Delliere and Martine, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.
Fairleigh Dickinson (3-1), who has already beaten conference rival Seton Hall, dropped its first match of the season.
The Scarlet Knights will look to continue their stellar play when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on SUNY Binghamton on Feb. 2.
