PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team will participate in multiple charitable events in the fall, coach Laura Brand-Sias announced Wednesday. The team will also host three home games on Saturday, Oct. 4, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the RU Turf Field. Rutgers will face Lehigh at 11:00 a.m., Lehigh will take on Fairfield at 12:00 p.m., and RU will play Fairfield at 1:00 p.m.
Rutgers to compete in "Lacrosse for Leukemia":
The Scarlet Knights will compete in the 11th Annual Price-Modern "Lacrosse for Leukemia" Fall Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the St. Paul's School in Brooklandville, Md.,
The "Lacrosse for Leukemia" event will feature some of the best women's and men's lacrosse programs across the country, while also raising money to help research cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. The twelve-team exhibition tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. Each team will be paired with an "honorary captain," a child who is currently undergoing treatment for blood cancer.
Other teams competing are George Mason, Johns Hopkins, BIG EAST foes Loyola (Md.) and Louisville, Maryland, Penn State and Towson. The contests will consist of two 35-minute running halves with 10 minute halftimes. Rutgers will face Loyola (Md.) at 1:00 p.m. before taking on Towson at 2:30 p.m. The men's teams in the 2008 tournament include Air Force, Mt. St. Mary's, Rutgers, St. John's, Towson, UMBC and Washington College.
The "Lacrosse for Leukemia" Tournament benefits the Maryland chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which raises money to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Coaches to run in half-marathon for charity:
Brand-Sias and assistant coach Kelly Nangle will run in the Philadelphia Half-Marathon on Nov. 23rd to raise money for Children's Tumor Foundation and the NF Endurance Team. For more information log on to: http://www.active.com/donate/nfraceforresearch08/RutLax
Rutgers women's lacrosse adopts a little sister:
The program has adopted a little sister through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Friends of Jaclyn is a charitable organization, created to raising public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. Funds will be used to improve the quality of life of children who are afflicted with a brain tumor, as well as donating contributions to pediatric brain tumor research.
