Rutgers Completes Weekend Sweep With Win Over Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Rutgers University women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of SUNY Binghamton and Army by downing the Midshipman, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Rutgers (3-0) topped SUNY Binghamton, 7-0, on Saturday.
After winning their first two matches of the season, 7-0, the Scarlet Knights received a very tough test against Army. The two teams split the six singles matches, with RU capturing the doubles point and the victory.
Rutgers picked up singles victories from freshman Amy Zhang (Plano Texas, junior Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and sophomore Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.). Zhang improved to 3-0 on the year in singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sarah Giles-Madden at No. 2. Meanwhile, Zaretser won easily at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Kristin Beehler and Arlak topped Diana Alquero 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
In doubles, Zaretser and Zhang teamed up to complete a perfect day with an 8-1 victory over Giles-Madden and Verano at No. 1. At No. 2 doubles, senior Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) and Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Ford and Beehler.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action Thursday when they travel to Lehigh for a match starting at 3 p.m.
