Rutgers Remains Perfect In Non-Conference Play

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Rutgers University women's tennis team continued its hot start to the 2008 season as the Scarlet Knights breezed past Lehigh, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at the Lewis Tennis Center. Rutgers (4-0) dropped just two games in doubles action and six in singles play as the squad snapped the Mountain Hawks two-match winning streak.
The Scarlet Knights captured all four of the singles matches played, however were forced to default No. 5 and No. 6 singles due to illnesses on the team. RU swept all three of the doubles matches to garner the doubles point. Lehigh falls to 2-2 on the season.
"This was a very convincing win for Rutgers," head coach Ben Bucca said. "We had to default some matches due to illness today, but we should be healthy and ready to go for our BIG EAST opener at home against Cincinnati."
In singles play, RU captured wins at the top four spots in convincing straight set fashion. Senior Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) blanked Allie Schwartz 6-0, 6-0 at the top spot, while Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over all-Patriot League performer Julie Arthofer. Meanwhile, freshman Amy Zhang (Plano Texas) remained a perfect 4-0 in singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alexis Jacobi at No. 3. Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) wrapped up singles action with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Ruthie Furman at No. 4.
In doubles, Zaretser and Zhang teamed up to top Schwartz and Furman 8-1, Elder-Bush and Baker defeated Jacobi and Stacey Reich 8-0, and Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) and Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.) picked up an 8-1 victory over Arthofer and Victoria Vityuk.
The Scarlet Knights will look to continue their stellar play this Sunday when they open up BIG EAST play against Cincinnati. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the RU Tennis Complex.
