Apr 10 | Women's Tennis
STORRS, Conn. - Knotted at three with one match remaining, the Rutgers women's tennis team received a lift from senior captain Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) to edge BIG EAST rival Connecticut Wednesday at the UConn Tennis Courts.
The win improved the Scarlet Knights' season record to 11-8 (5-4 BIG EAST), while the Huskies dropped to 9-5 (4-4).
Bush defeated UConn's Kelley LoRusso 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles to give the Scarlet Knights the victory. Rutgers won the top three singles matches on the day, as freshman Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) beat Emily Herb 7-5, 6-1 to win her ninth consecutive match and sophomore Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) beat BreAnn Cheung 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
The Scarlet Knights picked up the doubles point as well, winning all three matches. Bush and Arlak defeated Herb and LoRusso, 8-6, while junior Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.) edged Allison Campitiello and Jessica Porter, also by an 8-6 margin. Sophomore Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) and Zhang defeated Chung and Katie Moritz, 8-5.
"The key was our very aggressive and confident doubles play, along with a few huge singles wins," head coach Ben Bucca said.
Rutgers will face Seton Hall Friday, April 11, at 1 p.m. in South Orange, N.J. The Pirates are 2-11 (2-10), and have dropped six straight after falling to DePaul, 7-0, April 7.
