SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Three Rutgers women's lacrosse players were named to the All-Conference teams, it was announced at the league banquet Thursday night. Sophomore attacker Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while sophomore defender Jessica Davis (Moorestown, N.J.) and sophomore midfielder Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
"I'm really happy for Brooke, Jess and Mary," said head coach Laura Brand. "They have worked hard all year long. They had great individual seasons, and they reflect the hard work the team puts in day in and day out."
Cantwell paced RU with 47 points, on career-highs in both goals (34) and assists (13). She has a team-high 52 draw controls, good for first place in the BIG EAST and ninth place nationally. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times in 2008. Her best game came in the Scarlet Knights' 10-9 overtime win against No. 18 Denver, when she totaled a career-high eight points on a career-high six goals, including the game-winner.
Davis was a key figure on a defense that held seven opponents to single-digit scoring. She recorded 27 ground balls, 17 draw controls and 20 caused turnovers on the season. She was selected to the 2008 All-BIG EAST Preseason team and was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on March 31. Cryan finished with a career-high 19 goals and 12 assists, up from 17 goals and two assists in 2007. She also tallied 14 ground balls, 20 draw controls and nine caused turnovers.
Syracuse and Notre Dame swept the postseason individual awards, as the Orange won both Attack Player of the Year (Katie Rowan) and Defensive Player of the Year (Lindsay Rogers), while the Irish received Coach of the Year (Tracy Coyne) and Midfielder of the Year (Caitlin McKinney) honors.
Rutgers (7-9, 2-3) will face Syracuse (13-2, 5-0) in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., on Friday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m. Freshman midfielder Marley Welsh (Jarretsville, Md.) will sing the National Anthem before RU and Syracuse square off.
