PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team saw two of its players receive BIG EAST awards, the league announced on Monday. Freshman attacker Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Emily Penn (Medford, N.J.) were each named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in their respective careers after leading Rutgers to a 2-0 record on the week.
Anderson scored nine goals in the two games after posting eight goals in the team's first 10 games. The freshman scored a career-high six goals in RU's 14-8 win over Saint Joseph's on April 2, following that up with a hat trick in the team's 10-6 victory over Connecticut on April 6.
Penn was a key figure on a defense that limited Rutgers' two opponents to an average of 7.0 goals per game. Saint Joseph's came in to the contest averaging 10.2 goals per game, but were able to score only eight against a stiff Scarlet Knights' defense. Connecticut scored six goals against RU after coming in averaging 11.0 goals per game in its previous three games. Penn also recorded four ground balls, three draw controls and seven caused turnovers in the two games.
With its win against Connecticut on April 6, Rutgers clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, to be played April 25-27 at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, April 9, when they will play Monmouth at Yurcak Field at 7:00 p.m.
