FRANKOSKI |
The 2008 campaign started slowly for the young Scarlet Knights. They opened their season with a loss to No. 1 ranked and three-time defending champion, Northwestern. RU followed that with a one-goal loss at Delaware, a tight 10-6 loss to Cornell and a 16-8 defeat at No. 7 Princeton. But the team bounced back, as six players scored in a 14-13 road win over Loyola (Md.). Junior Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, N.J.) led the way against the Greyhounds, recording four goals. The team wasn't finished, picking up its second consecutive one-goal win with a 13-12 home victory over Louisville. Junior Michelle Poole (Long Valley, N.J.), sophomore Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.) and freshman Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) each tallied hat tricks in the win.

CANTWELL |
The win against Denver was the start of a season-high four-game winning streak, as RU reeled off consecutive victories against Saint Joseph's (14-8), Connecticut (10-6) and Monmouth (14-9). Anderson tallied a career-high six goals in the team's win against Saint Joe's and Cantwell recorded five goals in the win over Monmouth. With the win against Connecticut, Rutgers clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship for the second consecutive year.
RU then moved into the toughest part of its schedule, falling to No. 5 Syracuse 18-6, dropping a tough 10-9 overtime contest to Temple and losing at home 22-9 to No. 8 Notre Dame. In its first round match with No. 5 Syracuse in the BIG EAST Championship at historic Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., RU fought hard early but was unable to sustain, eventually falling 22-7 to the eventual champions. In their final game, the Scarlet Knights held the Orange scoreless for the first 9:07 of the contest, the longest SU had gone without scoring a goal to start a game in 2008, breaking its previous mark of 8:03. Cantwell was selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team after posting two goals and a team-high three draw controls.
Cantwell was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Cryan and fellow sophomore Jessica Davis (Moorestown, N.J.) were each named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Although the squad dropped its last four games, the experience all the young players received will prove invaluable in 2009.
