PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers incoming freshman baseball player Steve Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) has been recognized in the latest edition of Sports Illustrated, which hit newsstands Aug. 28.
Zavala, who will officially join the baseball program when he begins classes at Rutgers next week, was a standout left-handed pitcher and one of the top hitters in the state of New Jersey last season. At the plate, he hit 532 with 36 RBI and 20 steals while playing center field. The publication noted Zavala's 5-for-5 performance with two home runs, a stolen base, five runs scored and four RBI in a 13-6 victory over Seton Hall Prep last spring. As a junior, he was named the Star Ledger's Morris County Player of the Year with a 13-1 record and 2.14 ERA on the mound in 2007.
Zavala, a product of Randolph High School, joins a highly-touted group of scholastic standouts that will begin their careers at Rutgers next week. The Scarlet Knights will open their fall season in a couple weeks as they begin preparations for the 2009 campaign.
