May 12 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Redshirt freshman pitcher Willie Beard (Spotswood, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Baseball Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced.
Beard was recognized by the conference after pitching a career-long 7.1 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts to earn his first BIG EAST victory in Rutgers’ 3-1 win over Seton Hall Saturday. The redshirt freshman out-dueled Seton Hall’s Sean Black with a stellar 99-pitch outing. After giving up a run in the opening frame, Beard retired the next seven batters and cruised into the eighth where he handed the ball over to the bullpen to finish it off. He scattered just six hits and walked just one in his 7.1 innings of work.
The Scarlet Knight pitcher was inserted into the weekend rotation March 27 against Cincinnati and has worked the last seven series openers for the Scarlet Knights.
Beard is the fourth Scarlet Knight to be honored by the BIG EAST this season, joining junior pitchers Casey Gaynor (Toms River, N.J.) and Dennis Hill (Hillsdale, N.J.) and sophomore leadoff hitter Michael Lang (Dumont, N.J.).
Rutgers will close its season with a three-game series against Georgetown at Bainton Field in Piscataway this Thursday through Saturday. The series schedule includes 3:00 p.m. games Thursday and Friday and a 1:00 p.m. contest Saturday.
