Queens, N.Y. – The Rutgers tennis team finished among the top teams at the USTA Women’s College Invitational over the weekend. For the first time under head coach Ben Bucca, two doubles squads advanced to the finals of the four flights of doubles.
“Our team played strong throughout the entire tournament,” said Bucca. “This weekend showed us that not only are we very talented, but that we also have great depth on our team. I was especially proud of the two teams that made it to the finals. The team is hitting its stride as we near the end of the fall season and look to ITA Regionals.”
Senior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) and junior Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) fell in the Flight A finals to Lenka Hojckova and Tana Illova of NC State (9-7). The pair had previously downed Bianca Aboubakare and Maxine Thomas of Brown, 8-1, in the semifinals.
Sophomore Michelle Green (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and junior Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas) paired up to defeat Annie Hang and Jurelle Mendoza of Army (8-3) in the semis. The duo fell by a score of 8-6 to Elizabeth Kaufman and Geraldine Leong of Cornell in the finals.
Cornell and Rutgers were the only two teams to have more than one finalist in doubles play.
In singles action, Zhang, Holzberg, Green and Maryana Milchutskey (Holmdel, N.J.) all won two of their three matches played. In the A flight, Zhang defeated Christina Ordaway of Cornell (6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-8) in the quarterfinals.
The Scarlet Knights return to action Wednesday, Oct. 20 for a 1 p.m. match at Columbia.
