Rutgers Softball Upends Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic

Boca Raton, Fla. (March 12, 2011) - Rutgers softball (10-8) won two low scoring affairs, defeating Middle Tennessee State, 2-0, and edging Florida Atlantic, 1-0, Saturday at the Parents' Weekend tournament on the campus of FAU.

Rutgers broke a scoreless tie in the fifth, as Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash) singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on the throw. Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) laid down a sacrifice bunt down the third base line, moving Alden to third. Sophomore Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) drove in the first run with a hit to the shortstop.

The Scarlet Knights added to their score in the seventh as junior Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) led off with a single up the middle. Sophomore Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) doubled down the left field line to add the insurance run.

Freshman Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) threw the shutout, scattering four hits over seven innings and walking one.

Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) pitched game two for RU, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking two.

In a pitching duel, RU got on the board against Florida Atlantic in the sixth inning, as Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Advancing on a groundout, Messina brought the junior home with a first pitch single to right field. Bragg reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, but the Scarlet Knights would not score again.

Rutgers finishes play at the Parents' Weekend tournament tomorrow with Michigan State at 11 a.m.
