TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Rutgers baseball dropped the opening game of its spring break trip to Central Michigan, 3-1, Saturday at Bob Warn Field on the campus of Indiana State. It was the first meeting between the two schools on the baseball diamond.
RU (2-10) was held to five hits against Central Michigan starter Nick Deeg (3-1), who pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win. Junior Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) (0-3) allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven over six innings in a tough-luck defeat. In relief, sophomore Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) tossed three shutout frames.
CMU (12-6) took advantage of an error in the second inning to go up 1-0. The run scored with two down when Tyler Huntey laid down a bunt for a base hit to knock in Zach McKinstry. The Chippewas then added two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Cody Leichman and a two-out single by Huntey.
In the ninth, sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) doubled for his second hit of the game and scored on an RBI groundout by senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.). However, Tim Black ended the game to pick up his seventh save of the year for CMU.
Rutgers and Central Michigan will complete a day-night doubleheader with another game today at 6 p.m. Junior Mark McCoy (Barnegat, N.J.) will make the start for RU.
