Charleston, S.C. (March 16, 2015) - The Rutgers women's tennis team defeated Buffalo, 4-3, in nonconference play on Monday afternoon.
"Today's match was a thrilling team victory as everyone on the team came together collectively to win the match," said head coach Ben Bucca. "It has been a very productive spring break trip and we are looking forward to out final matchi in Charleston against the College of Charleston."
The Scarlet Knights improve to an overall record of 6-5, while Buffalo falls to a mark of 4-6.
RU swept the doubles matchups with three dominant victories. Junior duo Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) topped their opponents by a strong score of 6-3. The pair of senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and freshman Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) and the duo of sophomore Farris Cunningham (Houston Texas) and freshman Lee Levy (Haifa, Israel) bested their opponents by identical marks of 6-4.
With an advantage from the team doubles point, the Scarlet Knights secured the win with three victories in singles action. Balsamo extended her win streak to three straight matches with a come from behind victory at the No. 3 singles spot. After falling 6-1 in the first set, Balsamo dominated her opponent by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 to take the win.
Li grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles spot, while Zein contributed a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot.
Up next, Rutgers remains in Charleston, S.C. to face the College of Charleston in a 2 p.m. match on Tuesday, March 17.
