Baseball Falls in Weekend Finale

April 19, 2015

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) had hits in each of his first three at bats, but it was not enough as Rutgers baseball fell to Michigan State, 6-2, Sunday at Bainton Field. It was the third game of a weekend series.

Going 3-for-4 on the afternoon, Freeman had his second game of the season with at least three hits and leads the Scarlet Knights with a .375 average in Big Ten games. Sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) joined in with an RBI as well Sunday.

On the mound, sophomore Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) (1-4) settled in after allowing three runs in the first to pitch six innings. Despite the effort, the right-hander suffered the loss in his sixth start of the year. Senior Jon Young (Old Bridge, N.J.) followed with a season-long three innings of relief, allowing one in the outing.

The Spartans (22-16, 7-5) jumped out early with three runs to start the game, adding single tallies in the second and fourth. However, the Scarlet Knights (12-26-1) chipped back with two in the fourth. Freshman Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) drew a one-out bases on balls and Devish worked another with two outs. Next up, Carter delivered an RBI single up the middle to put RU on the board. It continued as Freeman worked the count to full to put the runners in motion, grounding an unplayable ball up the middle with Devish running all the way home from second.

Michigan State called to the bullpen and Joe Mockbee (5-2) stranded the bases loaded to escape. He ended up pitching three innings of relief to earn the win for the visitors. Blaise Salter and Brandon Hughes both provided three hits for MSU.

Rutgers will next start a string of seven consecutive non-conference games starting Tuesday against Wagner. First pitch from Bainton Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
