Baseball Shuts Out Saint Peter's

May 5, 2015

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Finishing off a suspended game from April 22, Rutgers baseball earned a 5-0 win over Saint Peter's Tuesday at Bainton Field. The game lasted just one hour, 57 minutes despite being delayed nearly 13 days in the sixth inning.

With RU leading 3-0 upon resumption, freshman John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) worked four scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the year. The right-hander surrendered just one hit, one walk and struck out three. Sophomore Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) (3-1) pitched five-plus scoreless innings prior to the delay to collect his third win. He scattered four and struck out two over 61 pitches. Two double plays were turned up the middle defensively to help preserve the first shutout win of the season.

Senior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) went 3-for-4 to lead all players in the game, while freshman Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) added two. It was Zarrillo's 23rd career game with at least three hits.

Offensively, RU came out with two quick runs in the first inning. Zarrillo and junior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) both doubled to register the initial score. Following a single by sophomore Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) to put runners at the corners, freshman Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) connected for an RBI groundout with the infield back.

Then in the fourth, sophomore Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) hit a leadoff infield single and moved to third on a passed ball and wild pitch. Classmate Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) produced an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

The rain started to wash through with force in the top of the sixth, forcing the umpires to call for a rain delay. After a short time, the thunderstorm arrived with lightning.

O'Reilly entered on the mound to restart the game and stranded two on base to keep the 3-0 advantage. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Scarlet Knights added one run. Campbell reached on error to start and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by junior John Jennings (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). After advancing on a wild pitch, Zarrillo ripped an RBI single up the middle.

RU tacked on one more run for insurance in the eighth when senior Joe D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) hit an RBI single with two outs. Freeman had previously doubled.

Willie Krajnik (0-3) suffered the loss for Saint Peter's.

The two teams followed with the regularly scheduled game at Bainton Field.
