Tennis Drops Season Opener at UPenn

PHILADELPHIA - The Rutgers tennis team dropped its spring season opener Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of Pennsylvania, 6-1, at the Hecht Tennis Center in Philadelphia.
Rutgers saw strong action in doubles play, winning two matches to secure the doubles point. In the No. 2 spot, junior Ksenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) defeated Ria Vaidya and Marta Kowalska, 7-5. In the No. 3 position, senior Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and junior Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) picked up a close win, downing Lina Qostal and O.J. Singh, 7-6 (7).
The Quakers were able to find success in singles action, sweeping all six matches to secure the victory. Senior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) showed perseverance in the No. 1 singles position, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-4, to Kana Daniel.
Rutgers returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5, when the Scarlet Knights compete at the East Brunswick Racquet Club against Binghamton. The match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
