Tennis Drops Match to No. 42 Northwestern

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Rutgers tennis team fell to Big Ten opponent No. 42 Northwestern, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.

The Scarlet Knights (4-4, 0-2) suffered their second-straight defeat, while the Wildcats (4-5, 2-0) picked up their second conference victory of the season.

Competing in the No. 1 singles position, senior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) brought her match into the tie breaker set, ultimately losing to Erin Larner in the final stanza. Li jumped ahead of Larner in the first set, capturing the set with a 7-5 victory. Larner then produced a 7-5 win in the second set before winning the tiebreaker, 10-6.

In doubles play, Li and senior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) fell to Larner and Alicia Barnett, 6-3, in the No. 1 position. The team of Larner and Barnett is currently ranked the No. 35^th doubles team in the country. Junior Ksenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) also dropped their doubles match in the No. 2 position, 6-3.

RU returns to action on Sunday, when the Scarlet Knights host the College of Charleston at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at the EBRC. A preview to the match can be found here.
