Casten, Dunphey Awarded IWLCA All-Region Honors
May 13 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Two Rutgers women's lacrosse players - midfielder Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) and defender Amanda Casten (Brick, N.J.) - were named to the 2016 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Team, announced Friday.
The 2016 All-Big Ten members paced Rutgers on both ends of the field this season, as Dunphey led RU in goals (44), points (56), shots (99), shots on goal (82), and draw controls (31) and Casten collected team-highs in ground balls (30) and caused turnovers (17).
For her breakout season - the second- best offensive season for a Rutgers player in the last 10 years - Dunphey earned a spot on the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team. Casten, just a sophomore, was voted to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Second Team.
Casten and Dunphey were both named Big Ten Players to Watch prior to the season.
Both Scarlet Knights are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 18. The IWLCA will honor the All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on Saturday, June 4 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
Rutgers women's lacrosse has at least two all-region players in the same season for the 14th time in the last 15 season. Both players will look to become the first IWLCA All-American for the program since Lily Kalata took home third team honors in 2013.
RU ended the season in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals against No. 1 Maryland, losing by a 19-9 score to the eventual conference champions. The Scarlet Knights (6-12) won three of their final four games to close the year, including a pair of overtime wins against top-20 Ohio State. The program qualified for a conference tournament semifinal for the second time in three seasons.
