Temple Holds Off Women's Lacrosse, 13-11

PISCATAWAY, N.J, - Rutgers women's lacrosse dropped a tight contest against Temple, 13-11, Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium in the team's season opener. The Scarlet Knights (0-1) tied the game at 11-11 with eight minutes to go on a goal from senior captain Macy Scott, but the Owls (1-0) pulled away with two goals to end the contest.
Temple never led by more than four goals in what was a back-and-fourth game throughout. The game was deadlocked on four occasions, but the Owls responded with scoring runs each time to keep distance over RU.
Redshirt junior Nicole Kopyta and junior Paige Paratore led the Scarlet Knights with two goals apiece, while Paratore also contributed two assists for a career-high four points on the afternoon.
Freshman Samantha Budd, who made the start in her first collegiate appearance, had a big game for RU. The West Deptford, New Jersey, native led with four caused turnovers, tallied a goal and an assist, scooped three ground balls and gathered two draw controls while not turning the ball over once.
Junior goalie Bianca Dente made 12 stops in the loss.
The Scarlet Knights return to High Point Solutions Stadium next Saturday, Feb. 18 for an 11 a.m. game against in-state Monmouth. The game is the first of a doubleheader with the Rutgers men's lacrosse team, which plays Army West Point at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• RU fell in its season opener for the first time since 2012.
• Paratore set a new career-high with four points and tied her career-highs in goals and assists.
• Kopyta's two goals were a new career-high.
• Junior Amanda Casten and senior Kristina Dunphey tied for the team lead with four ground balls apiece.
• RU out-gained the Owls on the ground, 19-18.
