NORFOLK, Va. - In the rubber game of the series, Rutgers baseball fell behind early and could not recover in a 15-4 Sunday road loss to Old Dominion at the Bud Metheny Complex. The contest wrapped up the 21st consecutive year the Scarlet Knights and Monarchs met in a series.
RU (3-7) used six different pitchers in the game, with freshmen Tevin Murray and Kyle Muller each making their collegiate debuts and combining to not allow an earned run in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. Fellow freshman Eric Reardon worked a team-long two innings of relief without permitting an earned run.
At the plate, senior Mike Carter collected a single, a triple and two RBIs, as classmate Christian Campbell picked up two singles with one knocked in. Sophomore Tyler McNamara and redshirt freshman Tommy Genuario, who had his first collegiate hit, also both registered singles.
Old Dominion (8-2) built up an 8-0 lead with one in second, five in the third and two in third. The hosts would go on to tack on seven more.
The Scarlet Knights broke through with four runs in the eighth. Junior Kyle Walker drew a leadoff walk and moved up when McNamara singled down the left-field line. Both runners would move up on a groundout by freshman Anthony Greco. Genuario would then come through with an RBI single in his first plate appearance of the day. Next up, Carter roped a two-run triple to right-center and Campbell would eventually knock him home on a two-out RBI single.
John Wilson (2-0) earned the win on the mound for the Monarchs with six scoreless innings of work. The left-hander struck out five in the outing. ODU totaled 12 hits offensively.
James Torres (0-2) took the loss for the Scarlet Knights in his third start of the year.
Rutgers will next return to the road for a Wednesday game at Iona. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
