Men's Soccer Shuts Out Mount Saint Mary's
Aug 31 | Men's Soccer
EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Rutgers men's soccer team got into the win column on Friday night with a 2-0 shutout of Mount Saint Mary's closing out the three-game road trip to start off the 2018 season.
"Tonight was a tough, hard-fought game on the road and we got a couple of great goals from guys off the bench, which is nice to see," said head coach Dan Donigan. "Everyone is contributing from the starters to the guys off the bench. That's been a bit of emphasis for us to get everyone to contribute and everyone to be a part of this. We're happy for the result and now hopefully this can be the start of something good."
Sophomore transfer Miles Franklyn came off the bench to put away the game-winner late in the first half. The Teaneck, New Jersey product knocked in the deflection of teammate Vincenzo Pugliese's header off the Mountaineer keeper and a defenseman in the 40th minute
Fellow sophomore Kyle Galloway added in an insurance goal in the second half. Redshirt junior Brian Hawkins set up the score from the left side of the 18 lofting the ball to the far post for a Galloway one-touch into the Mount Saint Mary net.
The Rutgers defense, meanwhile, limited the Mount to six shots with senior Rafael Pereira recording only one save, but interrupting a number of chances on one-on-one situations. Additionally, sophomore Zeno Mazzucato came up with his second defensive stop of the season with a bicycle kick clear midway through the second half to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard.
The Scarlet Knights totaled 10 shots on the night with Mount Saint Mary's Bobby Edwards registering three saves in the loss.
"Mount Saint Mary's is just starting their program up again because they were cut a few years ago, but they've got a great coach who is going to do great things," added Donigan about Friday night's opponent. "I give them a lot of credit and wish them well because they are going to win some games this year.
"Now we've just got to recover and get ready for Sunday. Elon was supposed to play at Virginia on Thursday night and it got canceled because of weather and now they'll be able to rest for part of this weekend while we have the quick turnaround. We need to put a lot of emphasis on the guys' recovery right now."
The Rutgers men's soccer team will return to action at Yurcak Field on Sunday, Sept. 2 in the home opener against Elon at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus with Lou Brogno and Glenn Crooks on the call. Fans can drop by the marketing table to pick up a 2018 Rutgers men's soccer season poster.
