Iowa Takes Both Ends of Doubleheader
Apr 17 | Baseball
Teller permits no earned runs in six innings
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Iowa (15-9) scored five runs with two outs in the eighth inning to break open a 1-1 game and take the backend of a doubleheader over Rutgers baseball (11-12), 8-1, Saturday at Bainton Field. The Hawkeyes won 3-1 earlier in the day.
"The only good thing that happened today was that we got two really good starts from our pitchers," head coach Steve Owens said. "Ben wasn't perfect, but good enough to work seven innings and a complete game. He allowed only three runs and that normally gives you an opportunity to win. We didn't hit the ball well enough to garner scoring chances. In game two, Brent really pitched well after being shut down last week. He gave us a great start with one unearned run allowed, leaving us in a situation where we could have a chance to win. Again, there were bullpen issues and we didn't put together consistent scoring opportunities. The other team is beating us in all aspects of the game. We have to come back tomorrow and try to salvage one to get back to .500."
Back in the rotation, Teller struck out four in six innings with one unearned run against. The right-hander ended his outing escaping a bases-loaded jam with a double play.
Kevin Welsh picked up his fifth RBI of the series with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to even the game at one.
For Iowa, Cam Baumann permitted one run and three hits over seven innings to earn the win. Ben Norman collected three RBIs.
