
Track and Field Wins Six Events At Jesse Owens Invitational

Scarlet Knights record 14 personal records in final tune-up before conference championship
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers track and field turned in six event wins to highlight a weekend of PR performances at the Jesse Owens Invitational on Saturday, May 1 in Columbus, Ohio. The Scarlet Knights added four runner-up finishes against the six-team field that featured conference members Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue and host Ohio State.
"We had some big performances this week, including 14 PRs," said head coach Bobby Farrell. "Proud of the grit and toughness this team has shown over a tough stretch of competition. Now we have two weeks to get their minds and bodies right for a great Big Ten Championship meet. We're going to be ready."
Lou Mialhe and Olympia Martin led a pair of distance wins, Edwyn Pierre was victorious for the sprint group while Courteney Campbell, Perry Christie and Nadale Buntin took top honors in three jump events.
Mialhe, the school-record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, was won the event Saturday with a time of 10:49.99. Martin added a win for the Scarlet Knights in the 5,000-meter with a time of 17:03.11. She was joined by Stephanie Mauer, who placed fourth with a time of 17:57.36 in the event.
Campbell gave Rutgers its third win on the women's side, taking the top spot in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.75m (5' 8.75"). Campbell completed the mark in fewer attempts to edge out fellow Scarlet Knight Alivia Ash who placed second with the same height.
Additional top performances in field events for the women's squad, included Nyamekye Opoku-Agyemang in the long jump with a second-place finish, recording a leap of 5.87m (19' 3.25"). Kathryn Campbell and Alexa Gardner went three and four, respectively in the javelin. Campbell posted a throw of 43.49m (142' 4"), while Gardner followed with a distance of 42.24m (138' 7"). Jessica Molina placed fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 55.50m (182' 1").
Pierre finished first the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.86 to give the men's team a win on the track. Taj Burgess went second in the 400-meter with a time of 45.90.
Buntin placed fourth the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.45, but his highlight came in the long jump where he posted a first-place leap of 7.22m (23' 8.25") to add to the Scarlet Knights' win total. Patrick Warren finished runner up with a second-place distance of 7.06m (23' 2") behind Buntin.
Perry Christie was victorious in the high jump as he cleared a height of 2.10m (6' 10.75"). Rutgers went 3-4-5 in the men's javelin with Steven Coponi leading the way with a third-place distance of 63.08m (206' 11"). Michael Thomas placed fourth with a throw of 58.64m (192' 5"), followed by Luke Souders in fifth with a mark of 57.10m (187' 4").
The Scarlet Knights will have a two-week layoff before returning to competition at the 2021 Big Ten Outdoor Championships beginning on Friday, May 14. The three-day meet will be held in Champaign, Illinois by the host Illini.
