Apr 15 | Women's Lacrosse
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (6-7, 0-5) picked up its second consecutive non-conference victory with a 15-7 win over Vermont (5-7, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field. The Scarlet Knights scored first and never trailed against the Catamounts, using a 38-29 shooting advantage and a 6-0 scoring run in the third quarter to secure the weekend win.
Graduate student Marin Hartshorn tied a career high with five assists, senior Cassidy Spilis netted her ninth hat trick of the season with three goals while three rookies – Lily Dixon, Gianna Eglauf and Ava Kane – tallied multiple points to pace RU's offense. In total, 11 different Scarlet Knights scored against Vermont to help Rutgers cap an undefeated week after it defeated No. 6 Stony Brook on Wednesday in Piscataway.
Senior Ashley Campo recorded the first goal of the afternoon, weaving through a host of defenders for the finish six minutes into the contest. Sophomore Michelle Warren followed six minutes later with a free position attempt, and Dixon came from behind cage in the closing seconds of the first quarter to make it a 3-1 lead for the Scarlet Knights before the first break.
Hartshorn's first assist of the day came on a pass to junior Kate Carolonza, who delivered her 12th goal of the season right at the start of the second quarter. Eglauf then netted back-to-back goals, while a free-position shot from Spilis found the back of cage to give RU a 7-4 advantage at halftime.
It was all Rutgers in the third quarter thanks to a 6-0 scoring run in the next 15 minutes of action. Five different players netted goals in the quarter, including two from Kane in a span of five minutes. Senior Jenna Byrne added her first goal of the day at the 5:41 mark in the quarter, followed by scores from senior Lindsay Newton and rookie Kayleigh Coughlin to put the game all but out of reach thanks to a 13-4 lead ahead of the fourth quarter.
RU held the Catamounts to three goals in the closing minutes and saw goals from Spilis and sophomore Emalie Clothier for the 15-7 final.
