EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The No. 75 Rutgers women's tennis team (5-2, 0-0 B1G) defeated UMass (4-2, 0-0 A10), 6-1 Saturday evening. The win came on Community Day, a chance for fans to win raffles, enjoy free pizza and interact with the players with autographs.
"What a great day for Rutgers Tennis," said assistant coach Hailey Barrett. "UMass played a really tough match and we were able to hang in there and play some good tennis when it mattered most. We also had one of the biggest crowds we've seen here at the EBRC. Community Day was a huge success, and we're excited to see everyone again at future matches."
The Scarlet Knights won two straight doubles matches to take the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches.
"Having our fans on the court today was awesome," said freshman Zeynep Ilker. "Hearing from our fans is awesome because we feel the energy and feel even better on the court. I feel like everyone fought hard today. They were really good so it was a tough day but we found a way to get the win."
