QUEENS, N.Y. – Rutgers baseball dropped its midweek contest at St. John's by a score of 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon in Queens.
The Scarlet Knights (18-22) rallied from 5-1 to tie the game late, but the Red Storm (19-17) walked it off in the ninth to secure the victory.
After SJU loaded the bases in the first, it looked like a double play would end the frame, but the throw from second went wide and two runs crossed to give the hosts an early 2-0 advantage. The Red Storm added on two more in the third on an RBI double and sac fly, making it 4-0.
RU began to chip away in the fifth, with Jack Sweeney singling in one run to make it 4-1. St. John's answered right back with a double in the sixth to push the advantage to 5-1.
In the top of the seventh, Trevor Cohen singled in one and Sweeney drove in another with a groundout to make it 5-3.
After a run scored on a double-play in the eighth, Brennan Hyde tied the game at 5-5 with a booming double off the wall in center field.
With the game tied going into the bottom of the ninth, St. John's strung together three singles, including the walk-off knock with two out, to plate the winning run and take the 6-5 victory.
The Scarlet Knights strung together 12 hits and have collected 10+ hits in three straight games, but three double plays by the SJU defense proved critical in limiting RU to just five runs.
Brennan Hyde, Ty Doucette, Trevor Cohen and Pablo Santos all collected multiple hits in the game. Doucette and Cohen are tied for the team lead with 19 multi-hit games apiece.
Rutgers is back in action this weekend with a three-game series at Ohio State, with game one set for 6 p.m. Friday in Columbus.
