Baseball Beats Seton Hall, 11-4

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball beat in-state rival Seton Hall by a score of 11-4 on Tuesday night at Bainton Field.

The Scarlet Knights (16-17) used 10 unanswered runs and effective pitching to beat the Pirates (12-21) for the third straight season.

After loading the bases in the bottom of the first, RU got on the board with a fielder's choice error by SHU to take a 1-0 advantage.

Zach Gleason started on the mound for the Scarlet Knights and delivered his best outing of the season, pitching three scoreless innings with four hits allowed, three strikeouts and no walks.

In the top of the fourth, the Pirates took advantage of sloppy play to score three and take the lead. With the bases loaded, a passed ball and wild pitch scored one each. An RBI single plated the third to make it 3-1.

After coming in to get out of the jam in the fourth, Nolan Peel remained in the game and tossed a scoreless fifth for two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. He would go on to earn the first win of his career.

The Scarlet Knights answered right back to take the lead with three of their own in the fifth. A wild pitch scored JT Thompson before Pablo Santos launched his second home run of the season – a two-run shot to make it 4-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jack Sweeney hit his first career home run – a solo shot to deep left-center to give RU the 5-3 advantage.

Rutgers broke it open in the sixth, scoring six runs to make it 10 unanswered in the game. A single from Ty Doucette scored the first, a Thompson sac fly plated another and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from JD Jones scored the third. Santos then drove in a pair with a two-run single and Matt Chatelle scored on a wild pitch to push the advantage to 11-3.

Despite the Pirates scoring one in the ninth, Jordan Falco finished off the victory for RU on the mound.

Andrew Rondini also provided a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout and Preston Prince struck out a pair in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
