PISCATAWAY, N.J. ā Rutgers swimming and diving is on the road this weekend for a tri-meet in Charlotte. The Scarlet Knights will compete against Queens and Vanderbilt across two days at the Levine Aquatic Center. Competition will start on Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday's session begins at 11 a.m.
The Scarlet Knights were previously supposed to compete in Charlotte against Queens last season, but the meet was canceled due to travel issues for Rutgers.
Rutgers will be participating in its fourth meet of the season. After hosting a two-day Preseason Invitational to open the year, RU also traveled for a tri-meet against Liberty and James Madison (defeating both schools) and hosted Princeton last weekend in the battle for the Cannon Trophy.
Swimmer Emilianna Gonzalez was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second consecutive week this Wednesday. Gonzalez had two first place finishes and one second place mark as the New York, N.Y. native excelled during RU's meet last weekend against Princeton. Gonzalez won the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.37. That mark is tied for the second fastest time in school history and is a top-10 time in the Big Ten this year in the event.
Freshman Florence Robitaille also holds a weekly award this season, previously being named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week. Against Princeton, she won the 200 Backstroke, notching the 3rd fastest time for all Big Ten freshmen in the event this season.
Queens placed third in the Atlantic Sun and fifth in the CSCAA National Invitational Championship last season. Leonie Tenzer is the reigning ASUN Swimmer of the Week after collecting four individual event victories in freestyle and IM events. Last week, Queens fell to Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Florida Gulf Coast while posting a win over Wingate.
Vanderbilt is 0-4 on the year, having previously matched up against fellow SEC foe No. 10 Florida, as well as Florida International, Miami and mutual opponent Liberty. The Commodores return two swimmers who competed at the National Invitational Championship last season. Aubrey Hull is the school record holder in the 100 and 200 Back. Melissa Cowen had the school's top individual finish at the SEC championships in the 200 Breast.
This event wraps a busy stretch of meets for the Scarlet Knights, who will be competing for their fourth time across the past five weekends. The next event of the calendar is the Hawkeye Invitational for the divers on November 17-20, followed by the Golden Grizzly Classic during the first week of December.
