Vorgang Has Career-High Four Goals
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers attackman Greyson Vorgang scored a career-high four goals to lead the Scarlet Knights to an 8-7 home win over Villanova on Saturday afternoon in front of 767 fans at SHI Stadium. Vorgang, a redshirt sophomore who scored four goals in 11 goals last season in his first year as a Scarlet Knight, matched his output from last seson in a single game today, and has put home nine goals over the past three games.
Cardin Stoller had a season-high 14 saves for RU. Connor Udovich led the defense with three caused turnovers.
Stats were fairly even across the board, with Villanova leading in shots (38-35) and ground balls (27-26). Villanova's goalkeeper made 19 saves.
RU saw four different goal scorers have one apiece: Justin Lawler, Colin Zeller, Joe Juengerkes and Brendan Kelly. Colin Kurdyla saw his 12-game goal scoring streak end, but he had two assists and four ground balls.
The game dramatically different across the two halves. A high scoring first frame had the Wildcats ahead 5-4, with nine goals coming in the first stanza. RU led 4-2 after the opening 10 minutes, but the visitors answered with three goals in the final 2:25 of the first quarter, including a pair of goals in the last 11 seconds of the frame.
Two more goals, one for each team, came in the next three minutes of action to open the second, as Villanova led 6-5 after 18 minutes of game time. Across the next 42 minutes, there was only four goals scored in the game, with RU outscoring Villanova 3-1 over the final 42 minutes.
RU had two goals to close out the second quarter taking a 7-6 lead into halftime. The third quarter went by scoreless. Villanova finally broke through on the score sheet with 13 minutes to play, tying the score at 7-7. Rutgers' saw Vorgang put home his fourth goal of the day with 4:21 remaining, and that stood up as the game winner as the hosts prevailed.
Up next, RU has two more home games in the upcoming week. The Scarlet Knights hosts LIU Tuesday in midweek action and then Hofstra on Saturday.
