RU Honors Programs Seniors And Alumni
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – On Friday evening in front of a season-high 3,213 fans at SHI Stadium, Rutgers men's lacrosse faced off against a regional rivalry in No. 14/16 Penn State. The game was loaded with festivities surrounding the contest, with RU honoring 18 seniors in a pregame ceremony on Senior Day, as well as honoring four different past RU teams on Alumni Appreciation Day. Rutgers also honored the memory of a loyal supporter of the program, with the name 'Doc Peterson' on the back of each player's jersey.
Penn State claimed a 16-8 win in the contest to raise the Friendship Cup for the fifth straight season. The Nittany Lions improved to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play and dropped RU to 8-6 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Rutgers had momentum early on, with Colin Zeller scored the game's first goal, and RU taking a 3-2 lead near the end of the first quarter. However, Penn State countered with the next eight goals and a 14-3 stretch overall in the middle portion of the game to take command and seize the victory.
Colin Kelly scored three goals for RU, joined by Greyson Vorgang with two. Jack Lonsigner, JJ Aiello and Colin Zeller had one apiece.
Overall, PSU had an advantage in shots (41-34) and ground balls (29-27). RU won 14-of-27 faceoffs, with Brock Desmaris going 8-of-13 and Jake Rainero winning six.
Cardin Stoller made eight saves, and now has exactly 500 saves in his career. He is now ninth all-time in RU history in saves.
With the result, as well as Ohio State defeating Michigan earlier on Friday night, there are two options for the Scarlet Knights in the Big Ten Quarterfinals next week. RU will be the No. 6 seed in the league tournament and play a road game in the opening round. Pending the result of Saturday's Johns Hopkins – Maryland game, RU could travel to either Ohio State (if Maryland wins on Saturday) or Maryland (if Johns Hopkins wins on Saturday).
After next weekend's Quarterfinals, SHI Stadium will be the host site for the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals and Championship Game. That will be a doubleheader on Thursday, April 30 (3 pm and 6 pm) with the title game on Saturday at noon.
