Scarlet Knights Drop 13-10 Contest to Stand at 8-7
COLLEGE Park, Md. - No. 20 men's lacrosse was on the road for the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals, falling to No. 11/13 Maryland on Saturday evening. The No. 3 seed Terps defeated the No. 6 seed Scarlet Knights by a final score of 13-10. The Scarlet Knights fall to 8-7 overall with the loss, with Maryland improving to 7-5.
The win was the Terps second victory over RU in a two-week span. Rutgers continued to be hampered by injuries to their lineup with multiple starters out or limited. Despite that, RU was resilient and did not relent, scoring five of the final eight goals of the game.
Maryland advances to the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals, with the Semis and Finals being played in Piscataway as Rutgers will still host at SHI Stadium. Maryland will face No. 2 seed Penn State on Thursday night at 6 p.m., preceded by the winner of No. 1 Johns Hopkins and Michigan at 3 pm. The finals will be held on Saturday at noon.
Rutgers was led by three goals in the game by David Carroll, who set a new career-high in scoring. Carroll entered the day with three goals in six career games played across two seasons and recorded his first career hat trick. Colin Kurdyla, who earned All-Big Ten honors for the second time this week, posted his eighth multi-goal game of the season. He leads RU with 30 goals, 27 assists and 57 points on the year.
Cardin Stoller made 12 saves, giving him 512 stops in his career. He passed Max Edelmann for eighth all-time in RU history in career saves.
Haydn Sommer, Kasey Mongillo, Justin Lawler, Jack Lonsinger and Andrew Macheca all scored one goal for RU. A short-stick defensive midfielder, Macheca's goal was the first of his 59-game collegiate career.
Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead and extended that to 5-2. The home team was up 8-4 at halftime and 10-5 early in the fourth quarter. RU would not go away, scoring five goals in the final 11 minutes of the game, but the comeback push wasn't enough as the Terps held on.
Maryland outshot RU 42-34. The Terps had the advantage on faceoffs, 20-7.
