PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 17 Rutgers men's lacrosse earned a thrilling comeback victory on Sunday afternoon at SHI Stadium, defeating No. 11 Johns Hopkins, 9-8, in double overtime. The Scarlet Knights overcame three separate two-goal deficits and finished the game on a 3-0 run over the final 22 minutes of gameplay in front of 2,415 fans.

Haydn Sommer scored the decisive goal, with his game-winner giving RU the victory at the 2:38 mark of double-overtime. The Scarlet Knights were in the extra session after a thrilling finish to regulation, with Kasey Mongillo scoring to tie the game with a mere tenth of a second left on the game clock. Rutgers improved to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play with the win, dropping JHU to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Rutgers was led in the game by Colin Kurdyla with three goals and four points. Kasey Mongillo scored twice, while Haydn Sommer, Colin Zeller, Colin Kelly and Joe Juengerkes had a goal apiece. Cardin Stoller had a strong day in the cage, allowing just eight goal and making nine stops. It was the seventh time in 10 games that RU held an opponent to single digits.

"We stuck with our process, we had prepared well with a good week of practice and the guys stuck with the gameplan in a big moment in a big game," head coach Brian Brecht explained. "I'm very proud of their efforts all week and then executing in a big spot at the end."

Rutgers got out to an early 2-0 lead, holding JHU off the scoreboard for the first 12 minutes. However, Hopkins came back with a 5-1 run, scoring the next three goals in the game and five out of six to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. The Scarlet Knights saw three different goal scorers in the opening quarter, with Joe Juengerkes scoring the first, Colin Kurdyla the second and Colin Kelly the third.

After halftime, Kurdyla put home the next two goals in the game, giving himself a hat trick and tying the game at 5-5. JHU answered with two straight goals for a 7-5 lead, and led 8-6 after three quarters. The Blue Jays had a great chance to extend the lead early in the fourth quarter, but Cardin Stoller made a spectacular save to rob JHU's All-American Matt Collison and keep the margin there.

Rutgers then got a two-minute extra-man penalty, and were unable to score, with Hopkins trying to run out the clock on the victory. RU slowly built back. With 4:36 to play, Colin Zeller snuck in an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to one. Then, RU had one final possession in regulation, taking the ball on their side of the field from out of bounds with 12 seconds left. The defense cleared the ball up to Colin Kelly, who was initially stonewalled. He found an open Kasey Mongillo, who ripped a shot from 16 yards out past the goalkeeper. With just 0.1 seconds left showing on the game clock, the score was even at 8-8, and the game continued.

One four-minute overtime period then elapsed without either team scoring. It was decided in the second overtime period. Rutgers initial shot was saved, but the rebounded popped up in the air. It was corralled by Haydn Sommer, who dunked it home for the game-winner.

RU is on the road for the next two games. The Scarlet Knights next play at Michigan next Sunday, a noon game on Big Ten Network.
