BLACKSBURG, Va. – Rutgers baseball dropped the 4-3 rubber match at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at English Field.
The Scarlet Knights (4-3) were unable to come back from a fourth-inning deficit, as the Hokies (6-1) held on to take the series.
In the third inning, Virginia Tech used a two-out single to take a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Matt Chatelle walked, and Ryan Jaros and Quinten Perilli hit back-to-back RBI doubles to give RU a 2-1 advantage.
The Hokies retook the lead in the bottom half on an RBI double, RBI single and RBI sac bunt to push three runs across and make it 4-2.
An RBI double from Trey Wells brought home Charlie Meglio in the fifth to get back a run and make it 4-3, but that would be all the scoring for Rutgers on the day.
Chris Sand made his first career start in his young career, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out three, while allowed three runs on four hits. Andrew Rondini pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out a pair.
