Feb 25 | Women's Lacrosse
PRINCETON, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (3-2) lost to No. 14 Princeton (1-1), 15-9, on Wednesday night at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers used a 39-29 shot advantage and a 6-2 scoring run in the second quarter to defeat the Scarlet Knights in the out-of-conference matchup.
Senior Katie Buck tied a single-game program record with 13 draw controls, helping RU to a 16-8 advantage on 50-50 opportunities. Graduate student goalkeeper Simone Koryszewski produced a season-high 13 saves, including nine in the second half and six in the third quarter.
Junior Payton Tini registered a hat trick, while classmate Alex Popham provided a spark off the bench with a season-high two goals. Senior Lily Dixon tallied two points on a goal and an assist, as the captain needs four more helpers to set the program's career assist record.
The Tigers netted the first two goals of the night before Tini answered with an unassisted strike to make it 2-1 with 6:34 remaining in the quarter. RU's defense held strong down the stretch, allowing just one more goal for a 3-1 Princeton advantage after the first 15 minutes of action.
A 6-2 scoring run from the Tigers provided the home team with some cushion, but Rutgers continued to fight. Tini scored at the 2:43 mark, while Dixon found rookie Kate Theofield two minutes later for a highlight finish, as Theofield went behind her back for her first goal of the night. The back-to-back goals made it 9-3 Princeton at halftime.
The Scarlet Knights continued to chip away at the lead, using a 4-1 scoring run across two quarter to get within five. Popham scored twice during the stretch towards the back end of the third quarter, while sophomore Caroline Ling fired off an unassisted score to make it 12-7 at the start of the fourth.
Koryszewski put together her best stretch of the night during the comeback attempt, saving six consecutive shots on goal during RU's scoring run. However, Princeton added three goals in the final seven minutes of play to secure the 15-9 win.
