PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 25 Rutgers women's lacrosse (10-5, 4-2) defeated Oregon (6-9, 0-7), 21-7, on Sunday afternoon at SHI Stadium. The win marked the fourth conference victory of the season, as the Scarlet Knights secured their spot in the Big Ten Tournament later this month.
RU dominated the Ducks from start to finish, with its 14-goal win marking the largest margin of victory in a Big Ten game since joining the league in 2015. Its 21 goals were the most in a conference matchup since it defeated Cincinnati, 21-8, on May 2, 2010 when both schools were members of the Big East.
Rutgers has won five of its last six games, including ranked victories over No. 6 Michigan and No. 25 Ohio State. The 13-12 win over the Wolverines this past Thursday was the biggest win since the Scarlet Knights defeated No. 6 Stony Brook during the 2023 season.
"This week has been huge, but most importantly I'm really pleased with the effort we had today," said head coach Melissa Lehman. "Coming off a high of Thursday's big win, we really reset and refocused. We played hungry today."
Sophomore Caroline Ling produced her best offensive game "On the Banks," finishing with a career-high 10 points on four goals and six assists. Freshman Kate Theofield led 11 different goal scorers for Rutgers with a game-high five scores. Junior Alex Popham, sophomore Hilary Elsner and sophomore Delainey Sutley all had two goals in the win.
As a team, the Scarlet Knights outshot Oregon, 44-20. Senior Katie Buck reset her single-game program draw control record for the third time with 16 draw controls, helping RU to a whopping 26-3 advantage from the center circle.
The Scarlet Knights' defense was equally dominant, allowing just seven goals overall and three in the second half. RU forced 13 turnovers, while sophomore Stella Quilty earned her third win of the season in cage with eight saves.
Rutgers scored three goals in the opening quarter, highlighted by a signature behind-the-back finish from Theofield at the 3:43 mark in the period. Oregon scored late to make it just a 3-2 advantage for the Scarlet Knights after the first 15 minutes of play.
It was all RU in the second quarter, as Rutgers outscored the Ducks, 7-1, before the midpoint. Ling netted three goals during the dominant quarter, including back-to-back scores off passes from Theofield and senior Kayleigh Coughlin. Goals from Sutley and junior Payton Tini in the final minutes of the half made it 10-4 Scarlet Knights heading into the locker room.
Rutgers shut out the Ducks in the third quarter and used eight consecutive goals in the period to put the game out of reach. Seven different Scarlet Knights netted at least one goal during the stretch, including a nice finish from rookie Stella D'Ambro off the pass from sophomore Francesca Urtis to give RU its first double-digit lead of the day at 14-4 with 7:49 left to play in the third.
Ling dished out two more assists in the fourth quarter to finish with a game-high six helpers. Rookie Abigail Grove's solo score with three minutes left made it a 21-7 final.
"We just have the mindset that we're taking it one game at a time," Lehman said. "We're taking it one play at a time, playing clean, composed and together."
