Women's Soccer Battles to 3-3 Tie Against Providence

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's soccer played to a 3-3 tie against Providence on Sunday night at Yurcak Field in its home opener.
The Scarlet Knights (0-1-3) led for a majority of the contest, but the Friars (2-0-4) scored twice with under 10 minutes remaining to steal a draw.
Olivia Bodmer made nine saves in net to tie a career high. Her nine stops bring her to 231 career saves, one shy of seventh all-time in program history.
Ashley Baran got the scoring started early for RU less than two minutes into the match. Gabriela Gil found her down the right wing, and she slotted the ball into the top of the net. Seventeen minutes later, Reilly McGlinn doubled the advantage in transition. Lilia Calvert lofted a beautiful through ball that McGlinn chased down and calmly finished into the bottom right corner.
With a pair of early tallies, the Scarlet Knights went into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Friars came out applying pressure. Less than 10 minutes into the half, they scored directly from a corner kick to make it a one-goal game.
Despite conceding early in the half, RU pushed the tempo and got the goal back in the 55th minute. Jayme Malanda made a long run into the box from her spot on the back line and sent a cross into the box that a Providence player kicked into her own net, giving the Scarlet Knights a 3-1 advantage.
While Rutgers held the two-goal lead for much of the rest of the match, the Friars scored twice in just over a minute to tie the game. A long, lofted through ball led to a goal in the 85th minute, and a goal directly off a free kick in the 87th minute made it 3-3.
Neither team was able to find a winner in the final four minutes, and the match ended in a tie.
Rutgers will wrap up the nonconference portion of its schedule on Sunday when it hosts Princeton at 5 p.m. at Yurcak Field. Admission is free for all Rutgers women's soccer home games.
