KNOW YOUR KNIGHTS
Nickname: Sky or Skymoney
Major: Communications
I chose my major because: I chose Communications because it’s a broad major that gives me a lot of career options. I know I want to stay in the sports world after volleyball, whether that’s in sports media, marketing, content creation, or another area of the industry. Communications helps me build skills that can be applied to many different careers while still aligning with my interests.
One word to describe your Coach: Passionate
Best player ever competed against: Kendall Kipp and Anna DeBeer
I started playing my sport because…: My best friend told me her mom was coaching this church league volleyball team and I was tall and ended up loving it!
I chose Rutgers because…: I was looking for a program that valued me both as a player and as a person, and that’s exactly what this coaching staff and team showed me. Playing in the B1G was also a dream of mine. I knew we were viewed as underdogs in the conference, which made the opportunity even more exciting because I love proving people wrong. On top of that, the academics and lifelong connections that come with earning a degree from Rutgers made it an easy decision.
The person I most admire is and why: The people I admire most are my family, especially my younger sister. She is one of the strongest and most genuine people I know. Watching her grow, overcome challenges, and stay true to herself inspires me every day. My family has always supported me through everything, and they have shaped me into the person I am today.
If I wasn’t playing volleyball, I’d be: Definitely be a theater kid. I was involved in theater throughout middle school and high school, and I loved performing, singing, and being part of productions. My favorite musical I was in was Legally Blonde because it was so fun and full of great music. Theater gave me a chance to be creative, build confidence, and make a lot of great memories.
Favorite place to hang out on campus: Starbucks!
Favorite professional sports team: Lovb Houston
Favorite professional athlete: My favorite professional volleyball player is Mia Tuaniga. Even though she’s a newer professional athlete, she’s become one of my favorite players to watch. I really admire how she’s completely herself on and off the court. She plays with confidence, energy, and personality, and she isn’t afraid to show who she is. I think that’s something really special, especially in sports, and it’s one of the reasons I enjoy watching her so much.
One word to describe myself on the court: Energetic and passionate
One word to describe myself off the court: Genuine
Rituals I have before, during or after a game are: Before I have to have an Alani, journal to myself, positive pep talk in the mirror to myself, I always wear a bow and if I have a bad game I will throw that bow away but if it’s a good game I will re-wear it. During the national anthem, I always pray!
Few people know that I: Did competitive cheer for seven years before volleyball!
Person who had greatest influence on my athletics career: My greatest influences have been my dad and my strength coach, Dash. My dad started training me at a young age, having me do plyometrics in the street and teaching me the value of hard work. Dash came into my life during my junior year of high school and pushed me to be the best version of myself. He believed in me like no one else and played a huge role in my growth as both an athlete and a person. He recently passed away, and I’m incredibly grateful for the impact he had on me, and I will carry his legacy forever.
Favorite cereal: Honey bunches of oats with almonds
The movie I have watched the most in my lifetime is: Mamma Mia!
Favorite musician/group: Mariah the Scientist, SZA, Drake, Rihanna
The first song I knew all the words to is: Gotta go my own way - High School Musical
If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, I would win a gold medal at: Trying new coffee shops everywhere I go
Famous people I have met include: Livy Dunn not really anyone other than her
Favorite all-time gift received: I love anything that is memories with my friends and less materialistic things. Anything that is a scrapbook or letters is my favorite.
Pets I had growing up were: I always have had a chocolate lab growing up. Now I have a black lab named cookie, a little white dog named butter, and doodle names peanut.
My favorite Halloween costume growing up was: Gabriella from High School Musical
The place in the world I would most like to visit is: Italy or anywhere in Europe
The website I visit most often is: TikTok
My favorite teacher was: Mrs. Dunavon my 3rd grade teach
The quote that most resonates with me is: “When one door closes another one opens” or “everything happens for a reason”. I never planned to transfer schools twice but I have learned so many lessons at each school and by everyone I have met. And I’m so glad it all led me to finish here.
If my life was a book, the title would be: The Skylar Chronicles because I have a lot of funny random stories that just happen to me lol!
If I could choose any color when buying a new car it would be: Red or matte black
One thing on my bucket list is: To go skydiving
Phone app you cannot live without: iMessage or teamworks
