Scarlet Knights post 7-0 victory to open dual matches
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis recorded a 7-0 victory over Binghamton in its home opener on Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights secured the doubles point and six straight singles matches for the win.
"It is great to get the first dual match under our belt. It was great to have last weekend to prepare for this, especially for the freshmen," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "The focus was good, the effort and energy level was high.
"They were ready for today, very prepared and eager for it, which is going to be important. We talk about playing to win and not being scared of losing. We are building our confidence. A couple matches started slow in singles, but everybody picked it up. That is what I was very pleased with.
In doubles action, senior Mingxiu Du and Kat Muzik carried their momentum from last weekend with another win. The duo defeated Binghamton's Samara Eisenberg and Ashley Granieri at the No. 1 position by a score of 6-2. The Bearcats evened the competition with a win at the No. 3 spot as Binghamton's Maria Pandya and Paulina Tafler topped senior Lee Levy and freshman Maya Jacobs, 6-2.
Sophomore Jaci Cochrane and senior Chloe Lee would secure the doubles point for RU with a 6-3 victory over BU's Michelle Eisenberg and Olga Ostrovetsky.
Muzik went on to post the first singles point for the Scarlet Knights in the No.3 spot, defeating the Bearcats' Granieri by a score 6-1 in the first set and a straight 6-0 mark in the second.
"It was great to be home. We practice here everyday, but there is always a different vibe when it's match day. We had good energy," said Muzik. "I always think starting singles with a win is positive and it helps everybody keep going."
Freshman Isabelle Da Silva kept that energy rolling at the No. 6 position with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Emily Kong. Jacobs followed suit with a victory at the No. 5 spot (6-1, 6-3), while Lee earned a win over Ostrovetsky in the No. 2 spot (6-3, 6-1).
At the No. 1 position, Du opened her first set with a 6-2 win before cruising to a 6-0 victory in the next to top Samara Eisenberg. And at the No. 4 spot, Cochrane battled her way to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michelle Eisenberg to complete the sweep.
