Tennis Falls to Maryland in B1G Home Opener

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis dropped its Big Ten home opener to Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins (7-7, 1-2) claimed the doubles point and six singles to top the Scarlet Knights (5-7, 0-3).

"We are getting our opportunities and we're setting ourselves up, but, unfortunately, the last couple conference matches we have just not executed at the big points," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "In a conference this tough, you cannot win if you're not executing. We are going to really work on getting our confidence, getting in the key points and making sure we play aggressively and take charge of those points instead of playing passively."

After Maryland claimed the first doubles matchup at the No. 3 spot, sophomore Jaci Cochrane and senior Chloe Lee leveled the field with a 6-3 win over Ekaterina Tour and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka at the No. 2 position.

At the No. 1 spot, senior Mingxiu Du and sophomore Kat Muzik rallied from behind to tie up the match 6-6 with UMD's Millie Stretton and Eva Alexandrova. Despite the late push, the Terrapins would edge out a 7-6 (2) victory to establish a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Maryland held on to its momentum moving into singles. At the No. 4 position, Cochrane put up a fight against Yemelyanenka. After falling 6-2 in the first, Cochrane battled to a 7-5 decision.

Freshman Isabelle Da Silva opened strong at the No. 6 spot as she was edged slightly by Saya Usui, 7-6 (5), in the first. However, she would fall in the second.
