NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Rutgers tennis dropped its road contest at Yale by a score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. It marked the fourth of seven straight road games for the Scarlet Knights.
"Road matches are always tough, but each one of us are working super hard," said freshman Isabelle Da Silva. "Despite the overall team loss, getting a couple of single wins today gives us some confidence as we start conference matches soon."
RU moved to a dual record of 4-4, while Yale improved to 5-7.
The Bulldogs secured the doubles point to open the match, claiming wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to generate a 1-0 advantage.
In singles action, freshman Maya Jacobs breezed to a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 spot over Yale's Caroline Amos. Classmate Da Silva battled to a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 victory in the No. 6 position against Sunday Swett to give RU two points in the match.
Sophomore Jaci Cochrane put up a fight at the No. 4 spot, starting with a 6-4 victory in the first set. Yale's Elizabeth Zordani, however, responded with a 6-4 and 10-6 victory in the next sets to edge Cochrane, as the Bulldogsm also claimed the remaining three singles to earn the win.
Up next, Rutgers begins a week-long spring break trip in Orlando, Florida. The Scarlet Knights kick off the outing with a matchup against Georgia Southern on Sunday, March 11 at 11 a.m. ET.
"Everyone on the team is super pumped for the spring break trip," said Da Silva. "We have three matches during that week so we are getting mentally ready for them. We're going to continue to train hard this week and keep working on the things we took away from our past few matches."
