"Playing outside obviously feels really different. The points are a lot longer and it turns in to more of a grinding game more than anything, but I think we were all ready to make those necessary adjustments to play some really good tennis," said senior Chloe Lee. "Today was definitely a battle, it was really hot and we were playing a tough team so I'm happy we were able to pull it out."
In doubles action, senior Mingxiu Du and sophomore Kat Muzik earned a 6-4 win at the No. 1 position over Georgia Southern's Ella Monsey and Lindsay Truscott. Sophomore Jaci Cochrane and freshman Maya Jacobs collected a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot over the Eagles' Paula Boixader and Arianne De Winter.
Rutgers then pushed to a 3-0 advantage with wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions. Lee picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Truscott, while Cochrane recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Boixader.
Georgia Southern countered with wins at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 spots to even the match at 3-3.
Muzik battled at the No. 3 position over Monsey to clinched the match for the Scarlet Knights. Despite falling in the first set, 6-1, Muzik rallied back with a 7-6 (7-4) win in the next and a 6-4 win in the third to close the door on the Eagles.
"Getting back on the winning side is going to be huge going in to conference play," said Lee. "We all got some confidence in our games and we are all really excited for our matches coming up!"
