MADISON, WIS. – Rutgers women's tennis dropped its Big Ten opener at Wisconsin on Friday evening. The Badgers (7-7, 2-0) edged the Scarlet Knights (5-5, 0-1) to claim the doubles point before sweeping the singles matchups for the win.
In doubles action, Wisconsin posted the first win of the dual in the No. 2 spot. At the No. 1 spot, senior Mingxiu Du and sophomore Kat Muzik put up a fight against UW's MaryAnn Rompf and Kelsey Grambeau before being edged 7-6.
Seniors Chloe Lee and Lee Levy were in a battle of their own at the No. 3 spot against UW's Sara Castellano and Michelle Linden. The Badgers, however, would edge the Scarlet Knights, 7-6, to escape with the doubles point.
UW carried its momentum over into singles play. Although, sophomore Jaci Cochrane and Muzik battled at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, it was not enough to mount a comeback.
Cochrane fell in the first set to Grambeau by a score of 6-2 before being edged 7-6 in the next. Despite Muzik rallying a 6-3, second-set win after dropping the first to Rompf, she fell by the slim margin of 10-8 in the third.
