Scarlet Knights fall to the Cornhuskers, 5-2
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Freshmen Isabelle Da Silva and Maya Jacobs picked up singles victories against No. 38 Nebraska on Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Cornhuskers (15-5, 4-3), however, captured the doubles point and four singles to edge the Scarlet Knights (5-10, 0-6).
"The team's effort is absolutely there and you see that start to have an effect.," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "Despite the 7-0 losses [in our last few matches], the sets and matches could be very close. Then you start to see breakthroughs like we did with our freshman today and I think that gives them a lot of confidence."
Jacobs recorded her second Big Ten singles victory at the No. 5 spot over Nebraska's Katerina Matysova. Despite falling in the first set, 6-2, Jacobs rallied back for a 7-6 (4-0) win in the second before sealing the victory with a 10-7 margin in the tiebreaker.
At the No. 6 spot, Da Silva battled the Husker's Hayley Haakenstad for her own come-from-behind win, her first in Big Ten action. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Da Silva pushed to a strong 6-3 win in the next and closed with a 10-6 triumph to secure the matchup.
"For Iowa Sunday, we will need to play more aggressively in our doubles play and take advantage of the net play we get," said Ritchie. "We have to continue our singles play, really fight in the second set regardless of if we won or lost the first. If we can do that, I think we have a really good chance."
