EVANSTON, Ill. – After Northwestern (11-10) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth,
Jordan Sweeney hit a solo homer in the top of the 10
th and
Nate McLain shut the door in the bottom half to help Rutgers baseball (11-9) claim the rubber game, 6-5, Sunday at Miller Park. The Scarlet Knights won their seventh road game of the season and took the series by winning the last two over the Wildcats.
Â
"We played a great game until the ninth inning," head coach
Steve Owens said. ""To answer right back and change the momentum again was important. The guys stuck to a good offensive approach today and short of two innings, we played really well this weekend. Anytime you can go on the road against a team ahead of you in the standings and pick up two wins is great. I'm excited for our team and look forward to a good trip home."
Â
Sweeney's seventh homer of the season was the difference, with
Ryan Lasko previously hitting two long balls.
Richie Schiekofer added two hits to finish with nine in the series.
Â
On the mound,
Justin Sinibaldi worked five shutout innings with five strikeouts in his first collegiate start. The left-hander stranded six runners on base.
Parker Scott held the lead with 2.2 scoreless in relief. McLain left an inherited runner for the save, his first as a Scarlet Knight.
Â
"Justin was awesome," Owens said. "He had total command three pitches with good velocity. Didn't look like that was his first start. He really stepped up for his team. That kid has a really bright future in our program and is going to be a force going forward."
